University of Montana Students Pitch Tents on Campus to Protest Lack of Housing
Housing prices skyrocket across the city
Chanting “basic needs for all” demands for affordable housing, two dozen University of Montana students and faculty put up tents on campus and engaged in a spirited protest, demanding that UM does something about the housing crisis that is roiling many of their students and using the stark imagery to represent the increasing homelessness they’re facing.
As housing prices skyrocket across the city, with the median Missoula single-family home prices now sitting at $500,000- a $200,000 increase from just two year ago- students are unable to find places to stay, with the scarcity putting pressure on the rental markets and making housing unaffordable or even unfindable.
With 25% of students using university housing, they are demanding university help, requesting that that speed up and conclude construction on some residences that are closed for renovations, as well as possibly mandating some double dorms become triples, at least for a while.
