The Presbyterian Church in America’s (PCA) Administrative Committee has revealed that they intend to discuss the actions of their Stated Clerk, Bryan Chapell, after he accidentally revealed a list of names he considers to be denominational “scandalizers” who have either “left the faith, their family or taken their life.”
In a letter published to ByFaith, Danny McDaniel and Roger Collins, Chairman and Clerk of the Administrative Committee, report:
Following the unintended disclosure of a list of individuals labeled as “scandalizers,” many Presbyterians have called for Dr. Bryan Chapell’s resignation as Stated Clerk of the Presbyterian Church in America, citing his role in fostering division and confusion within the denomination. Critics have sharply criticized his non-apology “apology” on The Gospel Coalition website, which expressed regret for the leak of the names and for failing to “protect the reputation of others” while refusing to acknowledge any error in compiling the list or making the accusations.
Many have further noted that several individuals on the list do not match the characterizations Chapell publicly attributed to them, and that Chapell’s apology seems more preocupied in being upset that people have discerned the names on the list, rather than the fact that he slandered and falsely accused them in the first place.
