Infiltration into Montana. The Highest Influx of People out of 50 States
Ask anyone who’s been in Bozeman longer than 20 years and they’ll tell you how the city has changed.
BOZEMAN, Mont. — Ask anyone who’s been in Bozeman longer than 20 years and they’ll tell you how the city has changed.
“I remember when Bozeman just one exit had off of I-90,” Gallatin Association of Realtors board president Joanna Harper said.
The number of people living in Bozeman increased by around 22,000 in the last 22 years.
“Bozeman and the Gallatin Valley market has been growing in the entire time that I’ve been in the state of Montana, but it has reached an exponential level in the last couple of years,” Harper said.
A new state-to-state migration report shows 73% of Montana moves are into the state, compared with 27% moving out. The next highest is Alaska with 67% inbound moves to 33% outbound moves.
“The growth is across all sectors and all geographic areas,” Harper said.
The data suggest Billings and Missoula are leading the way, Billings with 3.9 times more inbound than outbound moves. Missoula actually saw a decrease from 7.1 times more inbound than outbound moves in 2020 to 4 times more inbound moves in 2021.
“We quickly become numb to the shock of pricing, but I think for anybody coming into our market, the cost of real estate is staggering,” Harper said.
