Dem and Gop Senators Reach Agreement on New Gun-Control Legislation
10 Republican and 10 Democratic
10 Republican and 10 Democratic senators got together yesterday and hammered out a bipartisan agreement on new gun legislation, with Democratic Senator Chris Murphy announcing that this meeting together of the minds was a “breakthrough agreement on gun violence- the first in 30 years.”
Some of the items include billions for mental health and abilities to enact and enforced “red flag laws.” It would close the “boyfriend loophole” so that no one convicted of abuse can own a gun, have enhanced background checks for buyers under the age of 21, and enact federal laws against straw purchasing. (buying guns on behalf of someone else who is not illegible to purchase)
While murphy was careful to note that this was not a done deal, and that “drafting this law and passing it through both chambers will not be easy…we have a long way before this gets to the President’s desk,” he believes it will break a three-decade old jam., writing:
The complete list of senators include Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), John Cornyn (R-Texas), Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.), Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), Cory Booker (D- N.J.), Richard Burr (R-N.C.), Bill Cassidy (R-La.), Susan Collins (R-Maine), Chris Coons (D-Del.), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.), Angus King (I-Maine), Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), Rob Portman (R-Ohio), Mitt Romney (R-Utah), Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), and Pat Toomey (R-Pa.)
Biden and Harris are not loving the legislation, as it does not include their proposed ban on ‘assault weapons’ but indicated in a series of statements that they’d likely support it, writing:
