Ice build up is a common way that flooding occurs in Montana once the thaw takes place so its always best to be prepared.
BOZEMAN, Mont. — “Frozen rivers are a common sight across the Treasure State every winter. Data shows 80% of ice jams occur between January and March.
“It’s not uncommon, so you know when we see these really cold temperatures, we get a fast freeze,” FWP information and education program manager Morgan Jacobsen said.
In Montana, the record for the most ice jams ever recorded in a single season happened in 1996. That year there were 154.
“They can go from something minor to something larger quickly, or it can freeze in place. There’s just a lot of things that can happen there, they’re kind of really difficult to predict,” Great Falls National Weather service meteorologist Bob Hoenisch said.”
